It’s off into Kentish woodland I go. A neighbour, for whom I occasionally garden and do handy bits ‘n’ bobs, had bought herself a Shepard’s hut, which was to be sited on a plot of woodland left to her by her grandmother. So, three of us set off to assemble it over four-days.
It arrived in flat-pack-form on a truck from Holland, it’s much cheaper that way, £4,700. I borrowed a friend’s camper-van, as I thought it’d be rather nice to spend a few nights sleeping out in woodland amongst nature and awaken to the dawn chorus of tweeting birdsong.
It was no easy task to build but a very satisfying one, like that virtuous feeling one gets after an honest day’s graft outdoors, to be rewarded afterwards with a pint down at the pub. Fortunately, we didn’t make too many mistakes, well, nothing that couldn’t be fixed with a bit of head-scratching, quizzical expressions, brute-force, power tools and time.
Now that the hard bit is finished, the next thing to do is insulate and decorated the inside walls, install a wood-burner for cosy winter days/nights and furnish with a bed, table and chairs, idyllic; makes me think I should buy myself a plot of land and do the same.
And what’s more, I’ve been invited to make use of it.
