Skip Diving.

The Handy Gardener

I’ll admit, I’m rather partial to a spot of ‘skip-diving,’ one man’s rubbish… they’re ideal for sourcing old house bricks (more expensive to buy than new ones), with which I like to create rustic, worn-in mosaic paths in the garden.

Due to all the trees surrounding my own garden, as lovely as they are, offering both shade and a sanctuary for the birds from the local cats, it means I don’t have much in the way of a lawn, as the trees tend to sup up most of the moisture from the ground.

Another favourite item to upcycle are porcelain toilet cisterns (see photo), they make fabulous containers for flowers and spring bulbs, plus, they don’t suffer from frost damage and crack as terracotta pots can.

They’re also great for growing tomatoes in, being just the right size and volume for one tomato plant, best of all they’re free and plentiful. I must see at least half-a-dozen a month of the things, either dumped in a skip or out on the street.
