Call me old-fashioned, but there are things I don’t/won’t do, laying fake grass is one of them. Truth be told, this isn’t a gardener’s job, it’s a builders job if it’s to be done properly.
Firstly, one needs solid, level ground, before laying down a weed membrane, apply a gallon of industrial glue then lay the fake plastic stuff, after which, you have to brush sand into it; gardening it ain’t, but if that’s what you want… well.
I gave up years ago trying to keep a lawn, due to the enormous trees growing along one side of my garden, shading out most of the light and sucking up what moisture there was in the ground beneath its canopy.
Grass lawns generally, have been falling out of favour for years now. Why would you give up such a large chunk of your precious garden space, to a boring strip of green when you could have pots, old tubs, galvanised baths and a butlers sink bursting and spilling over with colour (all to be found cheaply), be it flowers, small shrubs or dwarf trees?
Plus, you can get real inventive with some lovely rustic brickwork paving. You’ll have no more mowing, weeding and feeding to do, and no more pets peeing, leaving unsightly straw coloured patches all over your precious verde stuff. A lawn is fine if you’ve a big enough garden, however, many of us don’t.
Of course, less grass also offers the opportunity to expand your beds and boarders, perhaps, a winding brick path coursing through it? If you’ve a small garden, you could consider going upwards too, creating height and privacy.
