If I were to do a poll, I’d put my money on May being the favourite month of the year, quickly followed by August.
Things are popping up in the garden quicker than I can drop a trowel, the weeds are popping up even quicker.
I see the RHS has recently classified weeds as eh… ‘Hero plants,’ if I said that to my clients, they’d raise an eyebrow and assume I was being a lazy, skiving gardener and would probably never invite me to do their gardening ever again.
However, there is some sense in this, I’ll always suggest to clients that we not mow right up to the edge of the lawn, thus leaving somewhere for nature to hide and play, nor do I pluck out every single rampant ‘Herb Robert’ as once used to.
Weeds, or rather, ‘hero plants’ are all part of nature’s balanced eco-system (as are wasps… grrr!), but they still need to be kept in check from becoming the thugs and bullies of the garden we know them to be… more bindweed anyone? It’s funny how we’ll seed and plant out ‘Morning Glory’ but see Bindweed as a big baddie, to be fair ‘Morning Glory’ isn’t so invasive.
Unfortunately, 99.9% of us don’t have a spare acre to give over to nature or leave undisturbed, but for the people I know that can and do, the tended-to acres of their gardens are delightfully fertile, fruitful and buzzing with wildlife. Even if all you can afford to give over is 1 square foot, you’ll be contributing your bit and your garden will benefit, trust me on this. Happy weeding, I mean, thinning out.
