Indoors Outdoors.

If it weren’t for the fact that I’m a gardener who enjoys working outside, getting dirt under their fingernails and muddy wellies, I’d be taking care of people’s house plants.

Now that most 20-30-somethings live in high-rise glass boxes, with no access to an outside garden except perhaps for a balcony, a whole new job market has opened up that once never existed, house plant care and maintenance.

I had lunch at ‘Rules’ in Covent Garden earlier this year (you’ll need a good lie-down afterwards) before popping up to their Palm-room cocktail bar to say hello to Brian, the long-established and revered bar manager.

‘You should get the job here looking after the plants’ he said, ‘One day a week and you’ll not have to work the rest, it pays very well.’ It got me to thinking, it can only be a good thing to scratch up on the care and maintenance of house plants.

But let’s not tell everyone about ‘Rules‘ hidden Palm room, it’s a secret little gem you’d do well to keep to yourself.
