About the Handy Gardener

I first caught the gardening bug after a friend who tends the garden at Lamb House in Rye showed me a ‘Callicarpa Beautyberry’ shrub. It was adorned with the most stunning metallic royal purple berries (my favourite colour); and it was then that gardening became the new Rock ‘n’ Roll in my life.
To my delight, I discovered that with a bit of applied science and observation, those elusive ‘green fingers’ are available to all. Plant shade-loving plants in dappled shade and sun-loving plants in a sunny aspect. If they prefer damp conditions, keep the soil moist; if they prefer it dry, give them drier soil… easy! Once you’ve worked out the basics, you’re halfway there. Only halfway, mind, as you’ll never stop learning, but that’s part of the fun.
As for the ‘Handy’ bit, one of my earliest childhood memories is sitting on the porch on Christmas morning with my shiny new toy: a tool kit. I proceeded to take it apart using the very tools it contained. I was just curious about how things worked and how they were put together. My Mother, however, didn’t see it that way, and I received a proper ticking-off. Still, I was simply reverse engineering-albeit at the age of five.
I still enjoy fixing broken things and making them good whenever possible.
My other job is as a singer/musician (CLICK HERE TO LISTEN), so don’t be surprised if you hear me singing while going about my business in the garden.
Frances.
